CONTENT WARNING: Medical Abuse, Body Discrimination
HI! My name is Kayla (She/Her) and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor that specializes in Fat Trauma. On my social media page I explored Medical Trauma and the fat community. I will briefly explore some concepts. Feel free to engage and provide insight!
Individuals in larger bodies are often victims of abuse in the medical system. This abuse can be explored in 3 categories: shame, neglect and medical abuse.
Shame
Larger bodied clients will have had exposure to shame tactics from their medical providers. The anti-fatness that exists in the medical community along with the anti-blackness of the BMI perpetuates this violence. Fat clients cannot go to a sick appointment without mention of body size and the assumption that the fat client deserves their ailment due to laziness. Shame is a tactic utilized to dehumanize the individual. Shame decreases avoidance of medical care.
Neglect
Fat people are often denied medical care and testing from providers due to the assumption that the problem is related to weight. This has led to late diagnostics that have been life threatening to fat clients at times leading to death due to neglect.
Abuse
Due to the dehumanization of fat people and the moralization of health providers feel more comfortable abusing fat clients. Additionally, medications and medical tools are not tested or built for larger bodied people leading to more instances of abuse.
