Well before achieving global superstardom, Beyoncé, Solange, and Kelly Rowland were just three young girls growing up in Houston under the watchful eye of their beloved matriarch, Tina Knowles.
In a recent interview with Vogue, the proud mother reflected on cherished memories that hinted at the remarkable women they would become.
Recounting Beyoncé’s childhood, Knowles revealed the future icon faced bullying but showed incredible courage by standing up for others.
“She was very shy and she got bullied a bit. But the day that she stood up for someone – she didn’t stand up for herself, she stood up for them…I couldn’t have been more proud of her.”
Solange, Knowles shared, displayed an activist spirit from a tender age.
“Solange was out getting petitions signed [in] like fifth grade…so she’s always been an activist.”
While not her biological daughter, Knowles considers Kelly Rowland family after the 11-year-old moved in and was raised alongside Beyoncé and Solange. “Kelly was always this kid that just tried to protect everybody,” she remembered fondly. “I have a memory of her…being a little peacemaker.”
That peacemaking nature still shines through, though Rowland recently made headlines for asserting boundaries with an usher at Cannes. “I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries,” she stated.
As the three talents blossomed into cultural icons, Knowles cherished witnessing their distinct personalities emerge from childhood. “I believe kids are born with their personalities. My three girls all handled things very differently,” she reflected on Instagram.
“Learn their personalities and respect [their] individuality. Never compare the negatives, always praise the positive differences and pay attention to the things that you can brag on about them.”
Now a doting grandmother, Knowles finds immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren, who “make [her] laugh” and brighten even difficult days.
From the Houston playground to global stardom, Knowles’ heartfelt memories underscore the incredible journey of nurturing three exceptional talents into the forces of nature they are today.
