Bites on Seventh event to celebrate Black-owned food businesses

Eat Black Charlotte announced the return of its annual food festival, now known as Bites on Seventh, in Charlotte next month.

The festival will take place in Uptown on June 1 and will feature more than 15 Black-owned businesses, according to a press release sent Wednesday.

This year, the event will be hosted by local comedian Tim Shropshire and will also include live musical performances, including one from social media child star Savannah “VanVan” McConneaughey, among others.

A ‘beautiful’ evolution

Previously, the festival –then called Eat Black Charlotte Food & Culture Festival — concluded a weeklong local campaign that encouraged the community to support Black-owned restaurants in the city.

Erique Berry, a co-founder of Eat Black Charlotte, celebrated seeing the group grow from its social media roots to an annual festival, calling the evolution “beautiful.”

This year, Bites on Seventh will offer a new format, allowing attendees to sample curated bites and beverages from food vendors in an outdoor event setting paired with music and connection.

Changes and expectations

Although the event is free to attend, guests are encouraged to reserve tickets online as the festival will be cashless. Attendees will need to purchase an RFID wristband, which they can then link to a credit or debit card to buy food and beverages from vendors.

Tickets for Bites on Seventh are available for purchase on the festival’s website. Early entry tickets are also available for those looking for an enhanced and first-in-line experience.

“The added entertainment and performances this year will set the vibe,” Cory Wilkins, co-found of Eat Black Charlotte, said in the press release. He added that festivalgoers can expect “good food” and a desire to “hang out” throughout the day.
