Cardi B is known for blessing us with red carpet looks that get people talking. But this week, her Met Gala gown has been a topic of conversation – and not all of it has been good.

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper’s black tulle Sensen Lii gown was absolutely show-stopping. But when a reporter from Vogue asked Cardi who she was wearing, she replied, “They’re Asian and everything.” And as you can probably guess, that response got folks on the internet all up in arms, calling Cardi racist for failing to use the designer’s name.

“Imagine if a white celebrity said “idk he’s black and everything” and “U ruined everything when u failed to mention the designer” were just a few of the comments left on Cardi’s post of a picture of herself wearing the gown on Instagram.

And one of the biggest criticism came from Vogue‘s former managing director Gilbert Cheah, who took Cardi to task on social media.

“For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian,’” he wrote.

For her part, Cardi says her comment was not intended to be racist, adding that she simply forgot the designer’s name in all of the excitement of the night.

“I kind of forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name because his name is a little bit complicated… my mind was just racing,” she said.

And of course, she had to take a moment to clap back at Cheah the way only Cardi can.

“I feel like the designer and my stylist worked really hard for this theme, so for you to be kind of shady because she feel offended or whatever, it just proves why you’re the former director. You’re trying to offend me but you’re actually offending the people behind-the-scenes,” she said.
