An upcoming biopic centered on the life of George Floyd, titled “Daddy Changed the World,” is currently in development with his family involved in the project, Variety reports. Gianna Floyd, George Floyd’s daughter, and her mother, Roxie Washington, are executive producers on the film, alongside Queens Film & Media Productions and Night Fox Entertainment.

The screenplay for the biopic will be written by Gregory R. Anderson, known for his work on “Stomp the Yard.” Ted Field of Radar Pictures, Dr. Kaeita Rankin of 8 Queens, and Timothy Christian of Night Fox Entertainment are listed as producers.

In a statement, Roxie Washington expressed her excitement about the project. “We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all,” she said. Washington also highlighted the importance of swift changes to prevent other children from experiencing the same loss as Gianna did. “We thank everyone who stood with us and protested. George’s legacy will live on through this film.”

Timothy Christian of Night Fox Entertainment also emphasized the importance of telling George Floyd’s story. “The killing of George Floyd was a tragic, shameful moment in our nation’s history. His story, while painful, deserves to be told and I’m grateful to be a part of it,” Christian said.

Dr. Kaeita Rankin, another producer on the project, echoed these sentiments. “I am committed to using my platform and talents to make a positive impact in the world. By telling George Floyd’s story and shedding light on the injustices faced by marginalized communities, I hope to inspire change and create a better future for generations to come,” Rankin stated. “George Floyd’s legacy will not be forgotten, and I am honored to be a part of this important project.”

The biopic will recount the tragic events of May 25, 2020, when George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down on the street. The incident, captured on a bystander’s cellphone, sparked nationwide protests and demonstrations against the killing of unarmed Black people by law enforcement.

In April 2021, Derek Chauvin was convicted on all counts of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 22 years in prison. He received an additional 21-year sentence on federal charges following his guilty verdict on July 7, 2022.

The film aims to not only commemorate George Floyd’s life but also to serve as a catalyst for ongoing efforts toward justice and equality. By humanizing Floyd and shedding light on his personal story, the creators hope to inspire meaningful change and uphold his legacy.
