There is absolutely no confusing Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, especially when it comes to the power and influence women have earned and deserve.
Recently, Butker sparked backlash for criticizing career-driven women during a college commencement speech. The Eagles quarterback and Houston native Hurts delivered an empowering message in sharp contrast while kicking off Philadelphia’s Women’s Football Festival.
“Women are thrusted into positions to have to overcome this, overcome that and they lack the respect that they deserve,” Hursts, a product of Channelview, told the crowd Sunday. “I’m here advocating for it, not only in football but in every situation. We all know the woman is the rock of everything.”
Hurts seems naturally inclined to lift up and empower women because of how he was raised and the influence of women in his life to this day. He praised Philadelphia’s strong female fan base as reflecting that commitment to inclusivity.
“I honestly think it’s reflective of just how the fan base is here. You see more of a variety of support from women in our community. That’s good for the team,” Hurts said.
Hurts, who has an all-female management team led by super-agent Nicole Lynn, spoke glowingly about the important women in his life – his mother, grandmother, and sister. His comments stood in stark opposition to Butker’s controversial remarks at Benedictine College on May 13th.
Last year, Lynn was instrumental in landing Hurts a five-year $255 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL at the time.
“I feel like we saw eye-to-eye in terms of hunger and determination to succeed, and she’s making history,” Hurts said of Lynn during media day ahead of Super Bowl LVII, before she negotiated his big payday. “It’s a ton of different things that I feel like you don’t realize you’re doing until you’re able to reflect on them later on, and this is a thing that is surreal, having a full female team and Nicole leading the way. She’s doing a great job.”
Hurts is also in the news for the modest $215,000 home that he purchased for himself and his family in Houston, and the fact he still lives in a rented apartment in Philadelphia despite the millions he is worth.
The Chiefs kicker stated women should be “most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world” rather than seeking “promotions and career advancement.” He claimed women had been fed “diabolical lies” about having careers outside the home.
Butker’s speech drew widespread condemnation from athletes, celebrities, politicians and fans alike. It even prompted a mocking TikTok trend and calls for him to be released, though he had supporters like the wife of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.
For Hurts, elevating and empowering women is simply the natural extension of the influences and representation in his own life and career. He praised the strong female fan base in Philadelphia as reflective of that commitment to inclusivity.
“I honestly think it’s reflective of just how the fan base is here. You see more of a variety of support from women in our community. That’s good for the team,” Hurts stated.
While Butker’s remarks sparked outrage by advocating an outdated and regressive mindset, Hurts demonstrated the generational shift by unapologetically celebrating women’s invaluable contributions across all arenas of society.
