The Memphis Police Department has arrested and charged a woman in connection with the fatal shooting of her children’s father. The incident occurred on May 21, when officers responded to a shooting call at a home on Ardmore Street.
Upon arrival, they were met by three children who reported that their mother had shot their father, as reported by WMC.
The officers found the victim, the father, face down on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound. The suspect, 44-year-old Elita Bean, was also in the kitchen and claimed the gun went off during a struggle.
Investigators learned from one of Bean’s children that the parents had been arguing over keys prior to the shooting. According to the affidavit, the argument escalated and Bean asked her child to hand her a gun, after which she shot the victim three times.
The Memphis Fire Department pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Bean has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Authorities discovered a large knife in a garage trash can and a 9mm handgun in a bedroom. Bean was reportedly too intoxicated to provide a detailed statement to authorities, as per WREG.
“It’s painful to hear that somebody being on drugs, or doped up or smoking or whatever and drinking, that’s what I feel like opens the door to crime, you know, people don’t think about having a gun, being drunk. You kill somebody,” a neighbor told WREG.
Bean faces second-degree murder charges, with her court appearance set for Friday, May 24, as per court documents cited by Fox 13.
