National fellowship sets eyes on young, Charlotte-based civic innovators

[ad_1]

The Knight Emerging Cities Champions fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for young civic innovators — ages 18-35 — to make a greater impact in their communities. Called Champions, selected innovators receive funding, a community of support and technical assistance to help make a local project or initiative come to life.

The fellowship is accepting applications for its 2024 cohort through May 17.

According to the program’s website, the goal is to elevate “new voices” and support “bold projects” that strengthen and engage the local community.

By focusing on revitalizing downtown areas, enhancing public spaces, and fostering economic opportunities, the program is designed to help create positive change in eight cities across the country, including Charlotte.

With a priority on projects in Charlotte’s West End, recipients will have the chance to receive $5,000 in seed funding and a $500 tech bundle to support their initiative. This combination of financial support and training is meant to empower Champions to turn their ideas into reality and create meaningful change in their communities.

The program, in partnership with 8 80 Cities, a Toronto-based social impact agency, is set to begin with a trip to Toronto, Canada, for a three-day summit that provides Champions with the tools and training needed to implement their community projects effectively.

Information sessions for applicants in the Charlotte area are set for May 15 at The Pauline Tea-Bar Apothecary and on May 17 virtually.
