North Carolina Central University has named its next chancellor.
Karrie Dixon, who has served as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University since 2018, will begin her appointment as NCCU’s 13th chancellor on July 1.
Dixon’s appointment succeeds Johnson Akinleye, who is retiring on June 30 after leading the university for the last eight years.
The UNC Board of Governors elected her on Thursday after a recommendation from Peter Hans, president of the University of North Carolina System. Dixon’s recommendation came after she was selected as one of the three final candidates endorsed by the NCCU Board of Trustees from a pool of more than 50 candidates, according to the UNC System.
In a statement on the UNC System’s website, Hans noted Dixon’s ability to build “great teams” and take on “challenges with honesty and optimism” as some of her leadership strengths, adding that he was “excited” for NCCU.
History of leadership
Dixon has a well-established career in higher education, having worked in roles across the UNC System for more than two decades.
In the last 23 years, her roles have included teaching, various leadership positions in student affairs and academics and program assessment, among others.
As chancellor at Elizabeth City State, she entered a campus with declining enrollment and “financial pressures,” according to the UNC System.
Still, during her time, she increased enrollment, improved staff morale, established meaningful partnerships that positively impacted the university’s infrastructure and academics, and raised $24 million in private funding.
“NCCU embodies grit, innovation, leadership, purpose and legacy, and I am committed to building on our rich traditions and ensuring that our students, faculty, staff and alumni have the tools and opportunities necessary to succeed,” Dixon said in a statement about her new role. “I can’t wait to engage with all the possibilities that Durham has to offer.”
