BEWARE! “Anti-racist”, “feminist”, “social justice blablab” have become MARKETING JARGON that many mental health providers monetize upon.
News Flash! One cannot be any of those things without actively opposing genocide.
Evidence of acknowledging of one’s positionality, constant examining of power differentials, and the active dismantling of privilege are often absent.
Claiming these orientations without action serves only to congratulate oneself and leverage reputation or profit off the oppression of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color resisting colonization and imperialism.
You have the RIGHT and POWER to interview mental health providers
Here are some questions to ask therapists, counselors, coaches, or any health care provider before you decide to work with them:
- How are you fighting to stop ongoing genocides?
- How do you support Landback and Indigenous Sovereignty?
- How do you support Black Liberation and Reparations?
- What does collective liberation mean to you?
- What does abolition mean to you?
- What’s your journey in decolonizing your practice?
- Who are your teachers in liberation, decolonization and intersectionality?
What would you add to the list? Tell us in the comments here!
