Sacramento Century Challenge 2025: Ride for a Cause and Experience the Best of Sacramento Cycling
Get ready to pedal for a purpose, riding your bike for a great cause! The Sacramento Century Challenge, the region’s premier cycling event, is back for its 12th year on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This isn’t just any bike ride; it’s a chance to experience the stunning scenery of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, challenge yourself on one of four beautiful routes, and, most importantly, support a vital community cause: the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery.
Presented by the Rotary Club of Sacramento, the Sacramento Century Challenge brings together over 1,150 cyclists annually for a day of fun, fitness, and philanthropy. Whether you’re a seasoned century rider or a casual weekend cyclist, there’s a route for you. And the celebration doesn’t end at the finish line. A lively Post-Ride Festival awaits, complete with live music, delicious food, and refreshing beverages.

The Ride: A Journey Through the Heart of the Delta

The Sacramento Century Challenge offers four distinct routes, each starting and finishing at the iconic Capitol Mall in downtown Sacramento. From there, you’ll embark on a scenic journey through the picturesque Delta wine region, with its winding roads, tranquil waterways, and lush landscapes. The routes are designed to accommodate a wide range of fitness levels and cycling experience:
Route Distance Description
Full Century 100 miles The ultimate challenge for experienced cyclists, offering a comprehensive tour of the Delta.
Metric Century 63 miles A popular choice for intermediate riders, providing a substantial yet manageable ride.
Half Metric Century 36 miles A great option for those looking for a moderate ride with beautiful scenery.
Fun Ride 16 miles Perfect for families, beginners, or anyone wanting a shorter, more relaxed cycling experience.
Each route is fully supported with rest stops, food, and hydration to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride for all participants. You can find more details about the routes and registration on the official Sacramento Century Challenge website.

The Cause: Supporting the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery

More than just a bike ride, the Sacramento Century Challenge is a powerful force for good in our community. All proceeds from the event benefit the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, the only facility of its kind in Sacramento County. The Crisis Nursery plays a crucial role in preventing child abuse and neglect by providing a safe and nurturing environment for children aged 0-5 during times of family crisis.
The Sacramento Crisis Nursery is a family-strengthening program, where parents can bring their children ages 0-5 to one of two Sacramento nurseries for emergency childcare services or overnight care during difficult times.
Since 2014, the Sacramento Century Challenge has raised an incredible $866,000 for local charities, making a tangible difference in the lives of at-risk children and their families. By participating in the ride, you are directly contributing to this vital work and helping to create a safer, healthier community for everyone.

The Post-Ride Festival: A Celebration for All

After you’ve crossed the finish line, the celebration continues at the Post-Ride Festival on Capitol Mall. This lively event is open to riders, their families, and the entire community. Here’s what you can look forward to:
•Live Music: Groove to the sounds of Rotary’s own house band, “the Roadies,” from 1 pm to 3 pm.
•Delicious Food: Refuel with a variety of tasty options from food trucks, including California Street Tacos, Gameday Grill, Smokin Ewe BBQ, and Hefty Gyros.
•Refreshing Beverages: Quench your thirst with a selection of outstanding beer and wine.
Tickets for non-riders are just $10 and include an adult beverage, while kids’ tickets are $5 and include a beverage. All proceeds from the festival also benefit the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, so you can have fun while supporting a great cause.

Training Tips for Your Sacramento Century Challenge

Whether you’re tackling the full 100-mile century or the family-friendly 16-mile fun ride, proper preparation is key to enjoying your Sacramento Century Challenge experience. The scenic Delta routes offer a mix of flat stretches and gentle rolling hills, making them accessible to cyclists of various skill levels.
For those attempting their first century ride, consider building your weekly mileage gradually over the next few months. Start with your current comfortable distance and add 10-15% more miles each week. Include at least one longer ride each weekend, progressively increasing the distance until you can comfortably complete 70-80 miles. This will give you the confidence and endurance needed for the full 100-mile challenge.
The Delta region’s unique geography means you’ll encounter some headwinds, particularly in the afternoon. Training in similar conditions will help you develop the mental toughness and pacing strategies needed for success. Remember to practice your nutrition and hydration strategy during training rides, as the event provides multiple rest stops with food and beverages to keep you fueled throughout the journey.

The Economic Impact of Cycling Events in Sacramento

The Sacramento Century Challenge represents more than just a charitable fundraiser; it’s a significant contributor to the local economy. With over 1,150 participants and their families visiting the Sacramento area, the event generates substantial revenue for local hotels, restaurants, and businesses. Many riders travel from throughout California and neighboring states, making it a weekend destination that showcases the best of what Sacramento has to offer.
The cycling tourism industry has grown exponentially in recent years, with events like the Sacramento Century Challenge positioning the region as a premier cycling destination. The Delta’s flat terrain, scenic waterways, and mild October weather create ideal conditions for cycling enthusiasts of all levels. This economic impact extends beyond the event day itself, as many participants return throughout the year to explore the routes and discover new cycling opportunities in the area.

Safety First: What You Need to Know

Safety is the top priority for the Sacramento Century Challenge organizers. All routes are clearly marked with directional signage and supported by volunteers at key intersections. The event works closely with local law enforcement and traffic control personnel to ensure safe passage through the Delta communities.
Participants are required to wear helmets throughout the ride, and mechanical support is available along all routes. The event strongly recommends that riders carry basic repair tools, including tire levers, a spare tube, and a pump or CO2 cartridges. Rest stops are strategically placed every 15-20 miles, providing opportunities to refuel, hydrate, and address any mechanical issues.
The October timing of the event offers ideal weather conditions, with average temperatures in the comfortable 60-75°F range. However, Delta weather can be unpredictable, so riders should be prepared for potential wind and temperature changes throughout the day.

Join the Challenge!

The Sacramento Century Challenge is more than just a bike ride; it’s a celebration of community, a testament to the power of collective action, and a beacon of hope for children and families in need. Every pedal stroke contributes to a cause that makes a real difference in the lives of Sacramento’s most vulnerable children.
The event’s 12-year history demonstrates the incredible impact that can be achieved when passionate cyclists come together for a common purpose. The $866,000 raised since 2014 has directly supported the Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, helping to prevent child abuse and neglect while strengthening families during their most challenging times.
Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this unforgettable event. Register today and start your journey to the finish line! Whether you’re seeking a personal challenge, a fun family activity, or an opportunity to give back to your community, the Sacramento Century Challenge offers an experience that will stay with you long after you cross the finish line.
